In the first part, we will explore doctoral research designed to examine the perceptions andattitudes of nurses regarding willingness to work following an Ebola infected patient(EIP)admission. This is novel research, asthere is scant literature available that addresses RNs’ willingness to work with EIPs. This quantitative, descriptive studyrevealed a prevalent belief in an ethical duty to care despite personal and familial risks. A myriad of factors which affect RNs’willingness to provide care when EIPs are admitted for treatment were revealed in this research. These factors include familydynamics, availability of vaccination, hospital accommodation, access to emergency plans, hazard pay, appropriate personalprotective equipment, and social shunning(family, social, public). For the second part, we will examine acute stress reactions in hospital staff caring for EIPs. The use of modified critical incidentstress management debriefings and art therapy to defuse stress and refocus the critical care team to the task of patient carewill be presented. The final part will use information from the previous two sections to identify techniques to keep the critical care team preparedto care for patients infected with Ebola or other novel viral infections. The key points will include the following: how toeffectively plan for these patients, how to keep the critical care team working together, and how to defuse acute stress reactions.
