Instructions for Authors
The Journal of the Japanese Society of Intensive Care Medicine is the official
journal of the Japanese Society of Intensive Care Medicine and is interested
in publishing scientific studies in the field of intensive and critical
care medicine. The official languages of the Journal are Japanese and English.
1. Manuscripts for publication
All manuscripts and materials are received with the understanding that
they have not been published elsewhere and are not under consideration
for publication elsewhere in whole or in any significant part with the
exception of a scientific abstract. Investigations on humans must be conducted
in accordance with the Helsinki Declaration of 1964 and all subsequent
revisions. Investigations in animals have to be accompanied with the statement
that the authorfs institutional animal investigation committee approved
the study. Manuscripts should be prepared and submitted in accordance with
the gUniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journalsh
reprinted in JAMA 1997;277:927-934.
2. Copyright
After receipt of the manuscript at the editorial office, an acknowledgment
will be provided within a few days to the corresponding author. All manuscripts
will be reviewed by Editorial Board members or consultants selected by
the editor-in-chief. In principle, the author will be advised within 8
weeks of the acceptance, rejection, or required revision of the manuscript.
The revised version has to reach to the editorial office within 6 months
after the date of editorial decision. All revisions will require a final
editorial review, and resubmission does not guarantee acceptance of the
revision. An author may inquire at any time to the editorial office regarding
the status of a submitted paper.
3. Peer review

4. Submission categories and manuscript format
Reviews, original articles, case reports, equipment reports, rapid reports (short reports of original studies or evaluations), committee reports, short communications (brief descriptions of the results of laboratory research, or reports on new research equipment or techniques, or clinically interesting findings) and letters to the editor are welcomed. The total number of authors should not exceed 8 (3 in review articles).
The manuscript should have a title, abstract, text, tables, figures, legends and references.
A Certification Form, included in each issue, must be signed by all authors and be submitted with the manuscript.
- Reviews and original papers
- An abstract and up to 5 key words should be provided, with no more than 100 references for reviews or 50 references for original papers, and the maximum length should be 5000 words for reviews or 4000 words for original papers.
- Case reports and Equipment reports
- An abstract and up to 3 key words should be provided, with no more than 20 references, and a maximum length of 2000 words.
- Rapid reports
- An abstract and up to 3 key words should be provided, with no more than 20 references, and a maximum length of 2000 words.
- Short communications
- Up to 3 key words should be provided with no more than 10 references, and a maximum length of 1500 words.
5. Preparation of the manuscript
- All manuscripts must be typed double-spaced with wide margins on one side
of high quality A4-size paper. Type the page numbers consecutively beginning
with the title page in the upper right-hand corner of each paper.
- Each of the following sections must begin on a new page: title page, abstract,
text, references, tables, figure legends, and figures.
- Title page: The title page should contain the complete title of the manuscript, the full names and affiliations of all authors, and a running head of not more than 50 characters and the key words. The corresponding author should be specified, with a full postal street address, a phone and fax number, and an e-mail address.
- Abstract: Abstracts should be no more than 250 words in length and should have the following headings: Objective, Methods, Results, and Conclusions (structured abstracts).
- Text: The text should be organized into the following sections: Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, and Conclusions, followed by Acknowledgments, References, Tables, Figure Legends, and Figures.
- Abbreviations: Standard abbreviations should be used. Abbreviations must be defined in the abstract, at their first mention in the text, and on their first occurrence in tables and figure legends. The use of abbreviations in titles and headings should be avoided.
- References: All references should be cited in sequential order in the text and typed on a separate sheet of paper. References should be identified in text, tables, and legends by full-size Arabic numerals on the line and in parentheses. Titles of journals should be abbreviated according to the style used in Index Medicus. The first page of the referenced articles should be copied, arranged in the order of the appearance and attached to the manuscript. Listed below are samples of standard references.

- Standard Web Site/Electronic Format: Marion DW, Domeier R, Dunham CM, et al: Practice management guidelines for identifying cervical spine injuries following trauma. Available online at: http://www.east.org. Accessed July 1, 2000
- Tables: Tables must be numbered in order of appearance with Arabic numerals. Each must have a title and be keyed into the text.
- Figures: Submit a set of original and three sets of their copies. Submit four sets of photographs if there are any photographs in article.
- Legends: A legend must accompany each figure and must define all abbreviations used therein.
6. Proofreading and charge for English editing
Manuscripts accepted for publication are copyedited and returned to the author for approval. Authors are responsible for all statements published in their work, including any changes made by the copy editor. Authors are encouraged to proofread all edited manuscripts carefully. The Journal reserves the right to charge authors for excessive changes made to the text and figures at the page proof stage.
- Twenty reprints of an article are supplied free of charge. Additional reprints
are available through the Publisher.
- Color illustrations will be accepted; however, the author will be required
to cover the additional cost.
- Authors whose first language is not English will be charged for English
editing.
7. Submission
Four complete copies of the manuscript, including tables and figures must be supplied.
